It is a US Government requirement that all travellers entering or transiting the USA have their own individual passport. Children who have been endorsed on their parent's passport will not be eligible to travel on Air New Zealand flights to or from London-Heathrow, if these flights operate via Los Angeles or San Francisco. They MUST present their own individual passport at check-in.

This requirement includes travellers on NZ1 London-Heathrow/Auckland and NZ2 Auckland/London-Heathrow as these flights transit Los Angeles, where  ALL passengers are required to go through US Immigration formalities.
